Abstract:
The skin is the body’s outermost organ and is therefore constantly exposed to a multitude of environmental threats. At birth, the skin accounts for approximately 30% of body weight, thereby representing a significant body boundary. Defects in the development of the skin in early life have been linked to an elevated risk of infection and allergy. Our focus is the understanding which mechanisms of skin development are predetermined and which can be modulated to shape the process in cases of immaturity or dysfunction. Our research highlights the role of maternal microbial- derived metabolites in the development of a functional skin barrier at birth.
